Audio & Recording
Record and shape audio with powerful editing, time-stretching, comping, and flexible clip-based workflows.
Modular Sound Design
Explore creative sound design with Bitwig's modulation system and The Grid modular environment.
Bitwig Studio is a full-featured digital audio workstation designed for recording, arranging, improvisation, live performance, sound design, and instrument creation. The official Bitwig overview lists Linux alongside Windows and macOS as supported platforms, making it a native option for Linux-based music production.
Creative Workflow
Bitwig combines linear and nonlinear workflows in a single environment. The Arranger timeline is suited to detailed production and editing, while the Clip Launcher can be used to sketch ideas, experiment with arrangements, and perform live. Users can also work with multiple projects and move tracks, clips, and devices between them.
Audio and MIDI Production
The DAW provides recording and advanced audio-editing tools, including comping, time-stretching, clip-based editing, and flexible automation. Its note system supports expressive parameters such as micro-pitch, pressure, and panning, while hybrid tracks allow audio and notes to work together in the same workflow.
Modulation and Sound Design
One of Bitwig's defining features is its modulation system, with more than 40 audio-rate modulators in the full Bitwig Studio edition. These can be applied to devices, plug-ins, hardware, tracks, and broader project elements. The Grid also provides a modular environment for creating instruments and effects through Poly Grid, FX Grid, and Note Grid.
Instruments, Effects, and Samples
Bitwig Studio includes a large collection of instruments, audio effects, note effects, containers, and signal-routing devices. The platform includes synthesizers such as Polymer and Phase-4, a flexible Sampler, drum instruments, EQs, filters, delay and reverb effects, and the Spectral Suite for advanced sound manipulation. The full version also comes with thousands of presets, clips, and samples.
Linux Compatibility
For current Bitwig Studio 6.1, Bitwig states that Linux users can install the DEB package on Ubuntu 24.04 or later, while the Flatpak version works with modern Linux distributions that have Flatpak installed. A Vulkan- or GL-compatible graphics driver and an AVX2-capable CPU are required.
Bitwig also provides an official Flatpak installation method for Linux. Its documentation recommends using Flatpak-compatible plug-ins where possible and notes that plug-ins installed in locations such as /usr/lib are not automatically available to the Flatpak version. Bitwig supports PipeWire on Linux as well.
Hardware Integration
Bitwig Studio is designed to work closely with external music hardware. It supports MIDI, CC, CV, Gate, analog and MIDI Clock, and MIDI Timecode, allowing users to sequence and control hardware or use external equipment to control Bitwig. MPE and multitouch integration are also supported.
Editions Available on Linux
Bitwig offers multiple editions for Linux. The Essentials edition provides a smaller collection of instruments, effects, modulation tools, and sound content, while Producer and the full Bitwig Studio edition provide progressively broader production and sound-design capabilities.
For Linux musicians looking for a modern DAW with native support, flexible recording and arrangement tools, advanced modulation, modular sound design, plug-in support, and extensive hardware integration, Bitwig Studio is built specifically to provide that workflow across platforms.
