The Odeholm Audio thall amp is a VST3, AU, and AAX software plugin designed by producer Buster Odeholm for modern and extreme metal guitar tones. It is not a physical amplifier but an "amp sim" that mimics the sound of an amplifier within a digital audio workstation (DAW). The plugin is modeled on Odeholm's actual recording signal chain used on the Humanity's Last Breath album Ashen.
KEY FEATURES:
- Auto-Gain and DI Match: The plugin can automatically set the input level and features a "DI Match" function that applies EQ to your direct input (DI) signal to match the response of Buster Odeholm's personal guitar tone.
- Chug Enhancer: A dedicated module that intelligently enhances pick attack and palm mutes without gutting the low end, adding clarity and bite to your riffs in real-time.
- Built-in Gate: An included noise gate is optimized for modern metal, ensuring tight, sharp tones without killing dynamics.
- Whammy and Pitch Shifting: Polyphonic pitch-shifting controls offer two main functions:
- Down-Pitching: Allows for precision drop-tuning for writing in extremely low tunings without physically retuning your guitar.
- Whammy 4-Style Effect: An aggressive, glitchy pitch-up effect favored in the "thall" genre.
- Low Dirt and Thicken: A fuzz-inspired "Low Dirt" layer adds growl and weight, while the "Thicken" feature adds a sub-octave layer for depth. The "Parallel Amp" function routes the thickened signal through a second amp path, keeping the low end focused. A "Cleanse" button can instantly remove both effects.
- Simplified Interface: The plugin's design is focused on speed and efficiency for modern producers. It lacks vintage-style knobs in favor of a straightforward, visual signal path.
- Included Cab Impulse Response (IR): A single, mix-ready IR is included, modeled on the cab tone used on the Ashen album. You can also load your own WAV-format IRs.
- Lo-Fi Switch: A bandpassed "radio" filter for creating transitions or atmospheric intros.
- Tuner: A built-in, strobe-style tuner is included for accuracy, especially with extended-range guitars.
