Dawesome Abyss II is a unique visual synthesizer created for musicians and sound designers who want to explore sound in a more intuitive and creative way. Developed by Dawesome and distributed by Tracktion, Abyss II takes a different approach to synthesis by representing sound through colour, texture, and visual relationships rather than relying entirely on complex technical controls.
At the heart of Abyss II is an intuitive sound engine designed around the way people naturally perceive sound. Instead of working primarily with numbers, algorithms, and traditional synthesis terminology, users can explore different sonic colours and combine them on a visual gradient to create distinctive sounds. This makes the instrument particularly inspiring for experimentation, composition, and sound design.
Abyss II is especially well suited to cinematic music, ambient productions, electronic music, game audio, film scoring, and atmospheric sound design. Its sound engine can produce dark drones, vivid cinematic pads, lush textures, evolving tones, warm sounds, aggressive timbres, and other expressive sonic layers.
One of the standout features is Sample-to-Colour Extraction. Users can drop an audio sample onto the visual gradient and Abyss II can extract its spectral tone-colours for further sound exploration. Audio files and entire folders can also be transformed into custom tone-colour palettes, allowing external sounds to become a starting point for new synthesizer patches.
The synthesizer includes more than 400 presets, combining over 200 new patches with more than 200 upgraded sounds from the original Abyss. Version 1 presets can also be imported directly, making it easier for existing Abyss users to move their sound libraries into the new version.
Abyss II also includes a modular effects engine with four freely available slots and 20 custom-designed effect modules. Its BRUTE, VELVET, and SYNTIFY controls provide additional ways to shape tone, warmth, character, and aggressiveness without requiring complicated synthesis workflows.
For creating movement and evolving patterns, the built-in poly-rhythmic sequencer allows independent step counts to generate shifting rhythmic and tonal motion. The Wave Drag-Out feature is another practical addition, allowing rendered audio from played notes to be dragged directly into a DAW or back into Abyss II for further experimentation.
The instrument provides full MPE support for expressive controllers, making it possible to introduce additional performance dimensions such as pressure and other expressive gestures. Abyss II is also designed to remain light on CPU resources, making it suitable for larger music production sessions.
Additional improvements include undo and redo, mono-synth mode, a tagged preset browser with favourites, expansion pack support, an expanded LFO and ADSR editing area, modulated ADSRs, slow ADSR mode, a randomizer, and a high-contrast mode for improved accessibility.
With its combination of visual sound design, sample-based tone-colour extraction, cinematic presets, flexible modulation, effects, sequencing, and MPE support, Dawesome Abyss II offers a distinctive alternative to conventional synthesizers. It is a particularly interesting choice for producers, composers, musicians, and sound designers looking for an inspiring tool for atmospheric, cinematic, experimental, and evolving sounds.
