Virtual string instruments have come a long way over the years, but most still rely heavily on sampled recordings. Expressive E Soliste takes a different approach. Instead of samples, it uses advanced physical modeling technology to generate the sound of string instruments in real time, offering a more dynamic and interactive playing experience.
Designed for modern music creators and performers, Soliste focuses on expressive performance and real-time control, making it especially powerful when paired with MPE controllers such as the Expressive E Osmose.
A Suite of Four Solo String Instruments
Soliste includes four carefully modeled solo instruments, each designed to capture the character of its real acoustic counterpart:
VLN 356 – Violin: Bright, agile, and ideal for melodic passages.
VLA 419 – Viola: Warm and expressive, perfect for rich harmonies.
CLO 756 – Cello: Deep and resonant with strong emotional impact.
DBS 1130 – Double Bass: Powerful low-end foundation for compositions.
Each instrument is built using physical modeling, meaning the sound is generated by simulating how a real instrument behaves rather than playing back pre-recorded samples. This allows for deeper control over parameters such as bowing, vibrato, and articulation.
Designed for Expressive Performance
One of Soliste’s biggest strengths is its focus on expressive playing. The software is optimized for MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) controllers, which allow musicians to control multiple parameters simultaneously with natural gestures.
Players can manipulate aspects like:
Bow direction and intensity
Vibrato depth and speed
Pitch and pressure variations
Dynamic articulation changes
These controls allow musicians to shape their performance in real time, creating a more organic and expressive result compared to traditional MIDI instruments.
Multiple Playing Modes
Soliste offers three performance modes designed to match different playing styles:
Classic Mode
A press-and-tap system that triggers bow strokes with taps and controls dynamics with pressure.
Virtuoso Mode
A more advanced system that lets players control the bow movement directly through gestures.
Expressive Bow Mode
A hybrid approach combining the responsiveness of Classic Mode with the gesture control of Virtuoso Mode.
These modes allow users to tailor the instrument’s response to their preferred performance technique.
Deep Sound Customization
Another highlight of Soliste is its flexible sound engine. Users can customize the tone and behavior of the instrument in several ways:
Adjust bow response and articulation
Control vibrato and portamento behavior
Select different instrument body types for tonal variation
Apply built-in effects like EQ and convolution reverb
Because the sound is modeled rather than sampled, these parameters can be adjusted freely without the limitations of fixed recordings.
Strengths and Limitations
Soliste excels at expressive performance and modern sound design. The modeling engine allows musicians to explore creative gestures and performance techniques that are difficult to achieve with sample libraries.
However, some producers may find that modeled strings still lack the subtle imperfections of real acoustic instruments, especially when trying to replicate traditional orchestral performances. As a result, Soliste is often best used in contemporary, cinematic, or experimental music contexts.
