XMLimiter 2 is a professional audio mastering plugin developed by Xilentch. Designed for peak control and loudness maximization, it uses a specialized limiting algorithm intended to minimize unwanted changes to transients, stereo width, and dynamic character during mastering.

Unlike conventional look-ahead limiters that rely on attack and release time constants, XMLimiter 2 uses an approach that analyzes the audio signal throughout its duration to determine how peaks should be controlled. Its primary purpose is to help producers and mastering engineers achieve a competitive output level while retaining as much of the original mix character as possible.

XMLimiter 2 is a separate product from the original XMLimiter included in the XM Mastering Bundle. The two plugins use different algorithms and should not be considered interchangeable versions of the same limiter.

How XMLimiter 2 Works

XMLimiter 2 uses a signal-analysis approach rather than relying on conventional attack and release settings. This makes its workflow different from many traditional brickwall limiters.

The Input control can be used to drive the signal into the limiter, while the Output control adjusts the resulting level. Enabling LINK allows both controls to move in opposite directions together, helping maintain a more balanced input-to-output relationship.

The plugin's Final Ceiling stage is intended to catch overshoots. According to the developer, it is generally recommended to leave this stage enabled unless XMLimiter 2 is being used as part of a serial limiting chain, where the stage may need to be disabled depending on the signal path.

Oversampling and Peak Protection

XMLimiter 2 includes an oversampling control, with 16x oversampling enabled by default according to the developer. This setting is recommended for mastering, while disabling it may be appropriate for processing individual tracks.

The plugin also retains inter-sample peak protection. However, the developer distinguishes this from dedicated dBTP (decibels true peak) handling, noting that the plugin's design prioritizes signal transparency and processing efficiency rather than adding extra processing specifically for true-peak measurement and control.
